Winter Tenants
A short story. The cottage is empty for the season. It is not, it turns out, unoccupied.

They shut the cottage up in October — water off, shutters closed, the key left with the farmer down the lane — and did not think of it again until the photographs started arriving in the post, one a week, of rooms they were certain they had left empty.
Read it slowly, if you can. It was not written to be skimmed, and it gives up very little to the hurried eye.
