A book read twice is two different books. The second time, we are reading ourselves.

Nobody rereads to find out what happens. We reread to find out what has happened — to us, in the years since. The book holds still; we do not; and the gap between the two readings is where the real text lives.
The story turned out to be quieter than expected, and better for it. The loud version would have been easier to tell and worth considerably less.
