A thousand kilometres from the North Pole, behind a series of airlocks cut into permafrost, sit a billion seeds in foil packets — a library of every crop the species depends on, kept cold against a future no one wants to name too precisely.

Read it slowly, if you can. It was not written to be skimmed, and it gives up very little to the hurried eye.
