The jumper had a hole at the elbow and I had, for the first time in my life, the time to mend it rather than replace it. The darn is visible and slightly wrong and I find I am prouder of it than of almost anything I bought new this year.
The story turned out to be quieter than expected, and better for it. The loud version would have been easier to tell and worth considerably less.
